Patchouli is an exotic bush from the mint family with pinkish-white flowers that is native to tropical regions of Asia and mainly grown in India. The word Patchouli comes from the\u00a0Tamil words patchai (green) and ellai (leaf), and indeed its oil is derived from the dried leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n

It has been used for centuries in perfumery, in making incense, and in insect repellents. Besides its strong musky, sensual aroma it has also great health benefits \u2013 it is used as an antidepressant, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, sedative, and more… (see below)<\/span><\/p>\n

It was brought to Europe by Napoleon Bonaparte who carried a few cashmere shawls from Egypt that were patchouli-scented to protect them from insects and moth.<\/span><\/p>\n
